The Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie continues the tradition of the Allies of the United States of America by setting up a fir tree at Checkpoint Charlie.

At our press conference we report on the tragic phenomenon of silence. Many relatives and friends (former GDR citizens) are still silent about the disappearance of their family members and friends. Our research would be much easier if we were to receive more information from the population.

The national uprising of 17 June 1953 was a turning point in 20th-century European history. We bow in gratitude to the heroes of 17 June.

"Symbol of freedom, symbol of our love and our thoughts of fellow man on the other side of this most brutal of borders," reported the daily press in December 1961.

A wide audience from the worlds of culture, politics and society convened for today's celebratory event marking the occasion of the 55-year anniversary. Many friends of the museum from its infancy, escape accomplices and refugees, gathered at the Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.

At our press conference on 13 August 1989 we spoke of 191 casualties of the GDR border regime. In August of last year a total number of 1,841 casualties was announced. Unfortunately, during the research year 2016 - 2017 we found another 58 border casualties to report.

The significance of the national uprising of 17 June 1953 is always emphasised in our museum.

In December 1961, exactly 55 years ago, the entire world learned of the "Light at the Wall" campaign through photos in Berlin newspapers.

"The entire breadth of misery that communism and socialism exerted upon Germany has still not been extensively documented," explains Alexandra Hildebrandt.

The national uprising of 17 June 1953 brought about a turning point in 20th-century European history. It was followed by the Hungarian Revolution, the Prague Spring and the founding of the free trade union Solidarność in Poland. The national uprising of 17 June was the first mass revolt against Soviet communism.
