13 August 1961

Armed units from the GDR hermetically seal the city surrounding West Berlin, and construction of the Wall begins.

Over the clouds to freedom

With BALLON, based on a true story, Michael Bully Herbig brought certainly the most spectacular escape attempt from the GDR to the big screen. The original hot-air balloon is on exhibit at the Mauermuseum.
Escape gives way to innovation

"Crossed over"

The Engineering and sewing for freedom: for one entire family escape over land was hardly possible, over water too difficult - this left the air. The self-constructed hot-air balloon helped with two families’ spectacular escape to freedom.

Wall blog

On 10 December 2018 General Lucius D. Clay, father of the Berlin Airlift and personal representative of John F. Kennedy as special ambassador in Berlin, was posthumously awarded the Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt Medal. The award was accepted by his grandson, Charles C. Clay, Georgia State Senator ret.
