Presentation of a documentary book "People of the “gray zone” and a documentary film: "Crimea Island. Dejavu"

Monday, May 20, 2019 7.00 p.m to 9.00 p.m. Mauermuseum (Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie) Friedrichstraße 43-45 D-10969 Berlin

The book, by Crimean journalist Anna Andriievska and a staff member of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Olena Khalimon, refutes the myths of the Russian propaganda about events which took place in Crimea in 2014.

The book tells us how the Russian army seized the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014 and which challenges it brought for the people. In the book more than fifty witnesses refute Russian myths that Crimea “was taken without shots” and with the absolute consent of local residents. There are testimonies by people who have been captured by pro-Russian mercenaries and were subjected to a system of repressions and persecution, which has been deployed on the peninsula by the secret Russian special services and controlled by the Kremlin’s local authorities. Some of them were forced to leave the peninsula, and some continue to live there.

The book was released in June 2018 with the support of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance. The English version was adapted and published with the participation of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine.

In the framework of the event a documentary film: “Crimea Island. Dejavu” – a joint project of the Ukrainian journalist Ihor Chayka and Belarusian TV channel “Beltsat” about how and why Crimea came under Russian Federation control will also be shown.

The presentation will be held with the financial support of the Bohdan Hawrylyshyn Family Foundation. The special partners of the presentation are NGO “Young Generation will Change Ukraine” and the Secretariat of Kyiv City Council.
